One of the first interviews i did was with Fredrik from DDESIGN, today we have the second half of the dynamic duo. Henrik is the product manager at DDESIGN helps the customers with there technical questions. He loves his cars and used to drive a 200sx driftmachine but sold it to focus his time on DDESIGN.
Name: Robert Henrik Gustafsson
Occupation: Product Manager and Technical Support at DDESIGN
Where do you currently live: In a small appartment in Örebro but is currently moving into a house just outside of Örebro.
Music of choice in the garage: “Back in the days” when I spent a lot of time in the garage we hade radiostation here in Örebro that was called “Rockklassiker”. The station was frequently played until the songs, that actually weren´t to many, were etched into my head. (Trying not to say anything about the annoying commercials!). Nowadays when we spend all of our days at the DDESIGN-office we got the infamous live dj called DJ_Fripp3 playing all of the latest music that spotify has to offer. Don´t miss out our playlists. Just search “DDESIGN” and you will find Fredriks playlists!
Something about you that most people don’t know: Most of the people that read this knows me as the car guy Henrik and aren´t aware of the skiing guy inside of me. I love skiing just as much as cars, but got almost no time to skii anymore. I Miss it a lot! Pretty boring answer, but I don´t have that many secrets
If your banned from the garage for a weekend, what do you be doing instead? I´ll change the garage-word to office, cause I´m always here. If I was banned from the office I would go to my caravan that’s placed in Tandådalen, Sälen and just go skii all day long!
How did you get into cars? My dad introduced me to this. Somewhere in all of my moms albums with picture from when me and my sisters where kids, there is a picture of a 2 year old me sitting next to my dad and fixing the brakes of his old SAAB 9000. That SAAB actually hade a 4point harness in the rear middle seat where I always sat and drove along with my imaginary steering wheel.(Great memories!)
You had a S13 driftspec that you sold, how did you get into drifting? and what made you decide to sell the car? Oh I really miss that car!
It actually started out at the motocross tracks when I was a little, little kid. I drove around on my Kawasaki kx85 until I was about 12 years old and my dad was starting to think about the consequences when I wasn’t able to do that. He suggested to sell the kx and start with a more “down to earth”-sport on 4 wheels called Karting. I was a little doubtful at first but then a saw a Fifth Gear episode were Tiff Needell tested a Porsche Cayman. I wanted to learn to drive like him and when you are 12 years old Karting is as close as ju come to drive a Porsche. I started to compete in the “Formel Yamaha”-class and I actually still own that old kart.
When I was 16 years old I collected all of my summer job money and bought an all original red Nissan 200sx s13 that went trough a lot of diffrent plans until I decided to build a fully built Drift car. The old ca18det was thrown out before I was finished with the car for the first time. Instead I bought a sr20det and tuned it to around 300hp with a Precision 3231 turbo. Which was so much fun! I really liked that setup! I sold that engine setup to a really good friend that started to put in a Toyota Corolla KE70, that car isn´t finished yet but we will come back to that one later on!
I was looking to find a worthy replacement to the sr20 and found a complete GM LS1 with a Tremec T56 gearbox from a Pontiac Trans AM. That engine was the reason that I sold the car. No, not really, but one early spring day at testntune at Mantorp Park 2 of the 8 pistons decided that there was a life outside of the block. They left their buds at the end of the first corner. At this time DDESIGN had expanded and took all of my and Fredriks time and I felt that the time to rebuild the engine wasn´t there. August 2014 a friends dad gave me an offer to buy the car and I sold it. But as I told you I miss it!
If you built a new car, what would it be? I have always told everyone that I wanted a 4-door Skyline R34(ER34) so I will stick to that. But there is a KE70 I told you about earlier that needs to be finished. Maybe you´ll see that one at the tracks next year. 😉
For everyone out there that wants to build their own car, what’s your best tip for them? Start out with small projects! Change an airfilter or change the suspension to coilovers. Don´t try to rebuild the whole car direct. It´s easier to keep up the motivation if you see an end of the projects. In the end you will have rebuilt it all anyways! There is one more thing I want to tell you here. Buy real products, no name-products is cheap to buy but you will need to replace them in a short amount of time!
You are the product manager at DDESIGN, how did you come to join the company? What does a product manager at DDESIGN do? One day back in the early stage of 2012 I was standing and talking with Fredrik while looking at his Mitsubishi Evo 3 and my Nissan 200sx. He asked me if I wanted to join this journey to really take DDESIGN to the next level! Thats were it began and since that day we´ve been working from 07:00-22:30! No time to rest!
Nowadays I´m more of the technical support that will help out if there is any trouble when the customers mounting the products. But building a whole company is a really wide range of work tasks. We do all from building the webshop, guiding customers to the right product to packing packages and so on!
What are you looking forward to the most at DDESIGN this coming year? Grow, grow, grow! We did just release our new websop DDESIGN 3.0 (check it out att ddesign.nu) that we´ve been working day and night to get finished to the yearly DDESIGN-party! (When this interview is posted the party was in early december 2015) Hopefully everyone likes it and want to make DDESIGN their first choice, if we aren´t already 😉
What car(s) do you currently own?
“I” got two cars right now. My car is BMW 330d e91 with a manual gearbox (Important notice! I drive cars, don´t ride along in cars!) and my girlfriend drives a BMW 118d e87. Both of them are equipped with M-sport package and they are Lemans-blue to match each other! Yes I am a typical car nerd!
What event(s) are you looking forward to the most? Bimmers Of Swedens annual meet at Mantorp Park is real joy every year. But DDESIGNFesten 2016 will be my answer!
One day while working in you backyard you find gold! You can now afford your dreamcar, what would you buy? This question is really, really tough! I would say the Pagani Zonda R. That is as much “me” as a car could get!
